The Electrical Engineering department was originally opened in 1974. However, the former regime decided to close the university at the beginning of the eighties for political reasons. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) re-established the university in 1992, and in the academic year of 2004-2005, the newly re-opened department started accepting new students after 4 years of preparation, the first generation of students were awarded a
(BSc.) degree in Electrical Engineering in 2008 after a 4 year study program.
The department continuously provides Master programs (MSc.) in the following area of expertise (Power and Machines, Electronics and Communications, Computer and Automation).

The primary mission of the department is to provide in-depth understanding of the Basic Electrical Engineering Principles.
Students will have a basic background in the general traditional disciplines of electronics, communications, power, machines, computer and control.
