On Monday, November 4, 2024, a ceremony was held at the College of Engineering’s Deanship in the presence of Prof. Dr. Sirwan Khurshid (Dean), Assistant Prof. Dr. Chro Haider (Assistant Dean), along with several teachers and staff members, to honor Mr. Dler Qadir Abdullah on his promotion to the scientific title of Assistant Lecturer.
On behalf of the College of Engineering, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Dler. We hope that this new academic title will serve as a motivation for him to continue excelling in his scientific and administrative endeavors. We wish him further success in his career.
Mr. Dler received his bachelor’s degree in Kurdish from the College of Language in 1996, joined the College of Engineering as an employee in 2004, and later achieved his master’s degree in the same field.

According to the latest Stanford University report, released in mid-September 2024, these three esteemed professors from the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani have earned a place among the top 2% of researchers in the world.
Stanford University, in collaboration with Elsevier, compiles this annual list of the 100,000 most influential researchers globally. The ranking is based on 22 major fields and 174 subfields, with data sourced from the Scopus database. Researchers are evaluated based on their Composite Score, which reflects their research productivity, citation impact, and other key indicators of academic influence.
Ranking of 2% of the world’s researchers in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq
At the level of the Kurdistan Region:
Single-year results: A total of 44 researchers, from 19 public and private universities across the Kurdistan Region, were ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists. Of these, 11 are faculty members at the University of Sulaimani (3 from the College of Engineering).
Entire career results: 7 researchers, from 4 universities in the Kurdistan Region, were ranked based on their entire career research. Among them, 3 are from the University of Sulaimani (1 from the College of Engineering).
At the National (Iraq) Level:
Single-year results: Across Iraq, 208 researchers from 67 public and private universities were recognized for their single-year research contributions. Of these, 11 are from the University of Sulaimani (3 from the College of Engineering).
Entire career results: 47 researchers from 22 universities in Iraq were ranked based on their career-long research, including 3 from the University of Sulaimani (1 from the College of Engineering).

KRI and Iraqi Universities with Scientists Ranked in the World’s Top 2%
Following the assignment from the Deanship of the College of Engineering to direct the University of Sulaimani toward branding and international recognition, the Rector of the University of Sulaimani has approved the creation of official logos and branding guidelines for all colleges.
Under the supervision of Vice-Dean Dr. Chro Haider Ahmad, a team of engineers from the Architecture Department—including A. Rawand Abdulsami Fateh, A. Akar Kawa Qadir, A. Hawar Shawkat Karim, A. Yasser Mohammed Fakhri, and A. Haider Mohammed Amin—has been entrusted with the task of designing the logos for all colleges at the University of Sulaimani. Additionally, the team will prepare a comprehensive guide that will cover all necessary branding elements such as logo design, inscriptions, flags, and any related requirements to standardize the usage of these across events, official documents, and publications.
This initiative marks a significant step in unifying the visual identity of the university and enhancing its international recognition. The guide will help ensure consistency and professionalism in all representations of the university, both locally and internationally.

On September 12, 2024, the Engineering Consultation Committee of the College of Engineering Consultation Bureau held an important meeting aimed at improving the quality of consultation work within the college and ensuring a fair distribution of tasks among staff, including professors and engineers.
During the meeting, the staff involved in Material and Structure Design reached a consensus that establishing a streamlined approach to their work was essential for better performance and output.
To achieve this, the committee decided to assign a team leader to each department. These team leaders will be responsible for overseeing the division of labor, ensuring that tasks are distributed fairly, and maintaining the highest standards in consulting deliverables.
This new organizational structure is anticipated to bring greater efficiency, improve accountability, and enhance the overall performance of engineering consulting services provided by the college

A delegation from the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani, led by Prof. Dr. Serwan Khorsheed (Dean of the College of Engineering), along with Dr. Brwa Hamah Saeed (Lecturer), Dr. Ameer Mohammed Salih (Lecturer), Dr. Sardar Rashid Mohammad (Lecturer), Mr. Aso Akram (Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Department), and Mr. Khalat Qadir (MSc. Student in the Civil Engineering Department), recently visited Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. This visit is part of an ongoing collaboration between the two universities, focusing on the crucial project “Towards Earthquake Mitigation in Iraq: EMS-98 Adopted Vulnerability Assessment of Existing Buildings.”
Supported financially by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the “Ta’ziz Short-Term Measure 2024” program, the project has been under development for over four months. Its primary goal is to assess and mitigate the seismic vulnerability of buildings in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. During this visit, the team made significant progress, preparing the first and second drafts of a guideline for the project and establishing detailed plans for future implementation.
The University of Sulaimani delegation participated in a series of meetings, seminars, and workshops with their counterparts at Bauhaus University. A notable highlight was a seminar led by Dr. Brwa Hama Saeed, who presented the first draft of the guideline. The seminar was enriched by valuable feedback from participants, including Prof. Lars Abrahamczyk, Mr. Peshawa Luqman, and Mr. Baban Bapir of Bauhaus University, paving the way for future refinements.
Additionally, Prof. Dr. Serwan Khorsheed delivered a seminar that provided an in-depth introduction to the history, administrative structure, and scientific framework of the University of Sulaimani. His presentation aimed to foster a deeper understanding and enhance collaboration between the two institutions.
It is also noteworthy that Dr. Chro Haidar, Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering, played a pivotal role in the preparation of the project proposal, working closely with Bauhaus University staff from the very beginning.

On August 18, 2024, a joint meeting took place between the Sulaimani Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani. The meeting was aimed at discussing a long-term plan for the production and increased use of solar energy resources in the region.
Attendees included members of the Executive Council of the Sulaimani Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Obaid Ahmad Sulaiman and Mr. Aram Baban, along with several key figures from the College of Engineering: Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Serwan Khorsheed, Head of the Electrical Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Jawan Satai Raafat, Assistant Professor Dr. Aso Raouf Majeed, and Mr. Dastan Tofiq.
The meeting fostered intensive discussions on the issues related to solar energy, including challenges, opportunities, and steps to take moving forward. Detailed plans were developed with the goal of ensuring a better future for the environment and more efficient use of electricity in the region.
Guidelines and actionable steps were presented, with the aim of promoting a bright future for solar energy production and utilization.
It is worth mentioning that the College of Engineering continues its tradition of collaborating with external entities on projects that serve the nation. The College has been proactive in taking the initiative for engineering projects that have long-term benefits and is grateful for the efforts of all parties involved in making this meeting a success.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, Prof. Dr. Serwan Khurshid, Dean of the College of Engineering, accompanied by Dr. Chro Haider, Assistant Dean, Dr. Alan Saeed, Head of the Civil Department, Prof. Dr. Kawa Zaidan, Director of the Consulting Office, and several teachers and officials from the Road, Soil, Concrete, and Materials Laboratory, welcomed a high-level delegation from the Supplier Approval Center. The delegation was led by Dr. Hemn Fazel Najmuddin, Advisor to the Council of Ministers and Director of the Supplier Accreditation Center.
The purpose of the visit was to evaluate and potentially grant accreditation to the laboratories of the College of Engineering. After an initial meeting with the Dean and several faculty members, the delegation conducted a detailed inspection of the laboratory facilities and their working systems. The visit concluded with a meeting with the Rector of the University of Sulaimani, accompanied by the Dean and other faculty members, to discuss the findings and the next steps for accreditation.

On May 29, 2024, the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani hosted the first annual meeting of the ACI Student Chapter of Kurdistan Region Universities.
Prof. Serwan Khorshid, Dean of the College of Engineering and Deputy Director of the ACI Chapter, shared with the University of Sulaimani’s website: “This event, organized and supervised by the University of Sulaimani ACI-UOS Student Chapter, marks the first of its kind in Kurdistan.”
He highlighted that there are currently 13 chapters across universities in the Kurdistan Region, all officially affiliated with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in the United States, which annually reports on activities followed by more than 100 countries.
“The purpose of this event is to develop relationships between Kurdistan’s engineering colleges and share innovative ideas to promote innovation throughout the Kurdistan Region,” Prof. Khorshid stated.
He also noted that the Kurdistan chapters have gained international recognition, and students, alongside their teachers, have organized several scientific seminars, engineering project visits, competitions, and courses.
Dr. Barham Haider, Head of the Engineering Department at Tishk International University of Erbil (TIU), commented: “There are more than 13 student chapters in Kurdistan, aimed at familiarizing students with concrete work and fostering networking opportunities.”
He emphasized the direct link between the Kurdistan Chapter and the American Institute, which recognizes the chapters in the United States.

Dr. Ihsan Fethi, a renowned Iraqi architect and cultural expert, recently visited the archaeological mosque and school site in Khurmal, currently undergoing reconstruction. Accompanied by Dr. Amjad Mohammed Ali, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the project from the University of Sulaimani, as well as the Head of the Department and teaching staff of the Architecture Department at the College of Engineering, University of Sulaimani, Dr. Fethi’s visit provided valuable insights and feedback on the project, its design, documentation, and rebuilding process.
His positive opinion regarding the project serves as a significant motivation for the project staff and consultants, further validating the project’s direction and approach. Dr. Fethi’s visit can be seen as a form of endorsement for the project.
It is worth mentioning that the reconstruction of Khurmal’s archaeological mosque and school is supervised by the General Directorate of Endowments and Religious Affairs of Halabja province, with contributions from both Slemani and Halabja’s Antiquities and Heritage Directorate. The project is undertaken by View Pioneer, with financial support from local philanthropist Haji Abid Hawrami and his brothers, owners of Diwan Company, as a religious and national duty.
KCAC, View Group Consultant Engineering Bureau, and Consultant Mohammed Rauf Abdul Qadir are also providing consultation support for the project.

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Deanship of the College of Engineering conducted a meeting with the heads of the laboratories at our college.
During the meeting, the significant progress of the College of Engineering’s ranking in Iraq and Kurdistan was highlighted. Earlier this year, it was proudly announced that in the latest Shanghai rankings, the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani achieved a remarkable position, ranking between 400-500 globally. This achievement was the result of several factors, including research projects conducted by the college staff in collaboration with our laboratories.
Taking this opportunity, the Dean and Vice Dean of the College expressed their gratitude to the officials of the college laboratories. They appreciated the pivotal role played by the laboratories in enhancing the college’s standards and contributing to its improved global ranking.
Additionally, the meeting provided a platform to exchange views and suggestions aimed at enhancing the capacity of the laboratories. Discussions were focused on addressing the needs of the laboratories and resolving any existing shortcomings to further elevate the college’s academic and research capabilities.

A delegation of 12th-grade students from Ranya recently embarked on an enlightening journey to the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani. Welcomed by the esteemed Dean, Dr. Serwan Khurshid Rafiq, alongside dedicated faculty members and students from the ACI-UOS Student Chapter, the visit aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various engineering disciplines.
During their visit, the students were introduced to the cutting-edge facilities and innovative research initiatives of the college. Through interactive discussions and engaging presentations, they gained valuable insights into the diverse fields of engineering and the multitude of career pathways available to them.
The primary objective of the visit was to offer guidance and information to the students as they navigate their future endeavors in engineering. By fostering an environment of open dialogue and exploration, the visit enabled the students to envision their academic journey and explore the myriad of exciting opportunities awaiting them in the dynamic field of engineering.
As the visit concluded, the students departed with newfound clarity and inspiration, equipped to embark on their engineering education with confidence and enthusiasm. The visit not only provided valuable knowledge but also ignited a passion for innovation and discovery in the next generation of engineers from Ranya.

Today, on Thursday, March 7, 2024, a high-level delegation from the German Consulate visited the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani.
The delegation comprised two representatives from the German Embassy in Baghdad, a representative from the German Consulate in Erbil, a representative from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Iraq and Erbil, and a representative from the German KfW Development Bank in Iraq.
The purpose of their visit was to tour the Renewable Energy Center of the University of Sulaimani and engage in discussions with the Dean, Vice Dean of the College, Head of the Electricity Department, and directors of the centre.
The primary focus of the meeting was to explore avenues for assisting the government and the local community in the implementation of solar energy initiatives. Additionally, they exchanged ideas regarding potential collaborations on scientific research and the possibility of organizing a joint conference at the University of Sulaimani, specifically in the field of renewable energy.

For the first time in Kurdistan’s university history, the University of Sulaimani’s College of Engineering has forged a landmark partnership with Temple University in the United States. This agreement aims to facilitate master’s studies continuation for students of the University of Sulaimani’s College of Engineering through the Dual Bachelor’s-Master’s Degree (DBMD) program.
We are pleased to announce that a seminar will be held on Sunday, 3/3/2024, at 10:00 am in the seminar hall of our college. The seminar will be conducted by Assis, Prof. Chro Haidar Ahmed, the program coordinator. We encourage all interested students (from the Civil and Electrical Department – 3rd and 4th stages) to attend this session, where they will receive detailed information on how to apply for the program and participate in online meetings with Temple University.

According to the Shanghai ranking, in the 1900 universities that were selected out of the 5000 universities worldwide in the field of Engineering and Materials Science, the University of Sulaimani ranked in the 401-500 universities. On October 8, a distinguished German delegation from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, under the leadership of Dr. Joachim Lembach, Director of the University’s International Academic Office, paid a visit to the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani.
This visit marks the continuation of a robust partnership that has been in place since 2010 when the University of Sulaimani and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences have nurtured a close relationship as sister universities. This enduring collaboration has encompassed a wide array of activities, including facilitating educational trips to Germany for students from the College of Engineering, providing opportunities for students to participate in exchange programs at Karlsruhe University, and delivering valuable guidance and supervision to higher education students.
One of the most recent collaborative initiatives involved Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences allocating funds for the establishment of an advanced microcontroller laboratory within the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sulaimani. This noteworthy project, initiated in 2018 under the guidance of Professor (Dr. Niogaba) from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, in partnership with several lecturers from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sulaimani, underscores the commitment to enhancing academic resources and opportunities.
During the delegation’s visit, after bring welcomed by the president of the University of Sulaimani, they had the opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art laboratories within the Department of Electrical Engineering. This first-hand experience allowed them to gain insight into the support and facilities that can be extended to both teachers and students at the College of Engineering. As part of this visit, on October 8, the College of Engineering organized a workshop for the delegation, with the goal of fostering collaborative degree programs and advancing higher education.

Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Salih Mohammed has maintained his status as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists for three consecutive years, as conferred by Stanford University—one of the top 10 universities worldwide. This recognition is a testament to his exceptional scientific and research achievements, including citations, as further affirmed by Elsevier’s announcement on October 4, 2023.
Stanford University has developed a publicly accessible database of highly-cited scientists, offering standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in various authorship positions, and a composite indicator known as the c-score. The database provides separate data for career-long impact and single recent year impact, considering metrics with and without self-citations, as well as the citation-to-citing papers ratio.

The Department of Computer Engineering was inaugurated by Dr. Kosar Mohammed, Rector-President of the University of Sulaimani, his assistants, dean and college teachers.
In the beginning, the importance of the department was presented by a panel discussion, in which each of (Dr. Serwan Khurshid, Dr. Jaza Faiq) participated in the panel conducted by (Mr. Tawana Saeed).
Then the University president, his assistants, the audience and guests opened the department together.
On September 5, 2023, our College hosted the Falling Walls Lab competition. It’s important to note that this event receives annual sponsorship from the German organization DAAD. This year, thanks to the successful collaboration between the University of Sulaimani and DAAD Iraq, the competition was held at our College of Engineering.
Fortunately, a significant number of participants presented their projects to both the audience and the evaluation committee. These participants came from various regions, including the Kurdistan Region and other cities in Iraq, and they presented ideas and project summaries covering fields such as environmental studies, technology, science, engineering, and medicine. Their primary goal was to offer innovative solutions to contemporary issues with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
We believe that this event marks the beginning of a journey towards success and groundbreaking innovations. On behalf of the College of Engineering, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all participants and offer our best wishes for success to the winners. The top winner has earned an exclusive invitation to participate in the prestigious Falling Walls Lab in Germany, competing alongside selected representatives from different countries.
