About College of Engineering

The College of Engineering (CoE) is one of the three original colleges established with the founding of the University of Sulaimani in 1968. Initially, the college commenced its operations with the Department of Civil Engineering, enrolling 44 students during the inaugural academic year of 1968-1969. Subsequently, in 1973-1974, the Department of Electrical Engineering was introduced, admitting 30 students. The first cohort of students graduated with a BSc degree in the academic year 1971-1972. Over the years, the number of students steadily grew, resulting in 1451 graduates from ten BSc classes by 1981.

However, in 1981, the University of Sulaimani was temporarily closed and relocated to Erbil, assuming a new identity as the University of Salahaddin. The College of Engineering remained dormant until the University of Sulaimani was re-established in Sulaymaniyah in 1992. Following this development, the College of Engineering was reopened in September 1995, initially offering the Department of Irrigation Engineering (later renamed Water Resources Engineering). Subsequently, in the academic year 1996-1997, the Building Construction Department (later renamed Civil Engineering) began admitting students, followed by the Department of Architecture Engineering in 1999-2000. Finally, the Department of Electrical Engineering was established in 2004-2005. Moreover, The Department of Computer Engineering is currently scheduled to open and accept students for the academic year 2023-2024.

Between 1995 and 2021, the College of Engineering has graduated 4748 engineers with Bachelor's degrees, reflecting a gender ratio of 55% male and 45% female.

The mission of the College of Engineering is to cultivate highly skilled engineering graduates who are prepared to make valuable contributions to the workforce or pursue advanced studies.
