Civil Engineering

Striving for creating a sustainable civilization

About Engineering

The Civil Engineering department at the University of Sulaimani is dedicated to offering high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering a sustainable civilization with a profound respect for people and the environment. Our graduates, equipped with essential engineering skills, are poised to take on leadership roles in diverse civil engineering areas, including structural engineering, green transportation, geotechnical engineering, water resources, wastewater engineering, sustainability, and management.

Our journey began in the academic year 1996-1997, welcoming 29 registered students to embark on a four-year (BSc.) degree in Engineering Science. The department has since expanded to provide postgraduate studies leading to (MSc.) and (PhD.) degrees in Structural Engineering, with numerous students successfully earning their degrees in this field. Additionally, the department now offers a Diploma degree.

In line with our commitment to practical learning, students actively engage in laboratories, gaining hands-on experience in testing various construction materials such as cement, aggregates, concrete, soil, and steel, and exploring clean and wastewater treatments. This ensures our graduates are well-prepared for the challenges and responsibilities that await them in the field of civil engineering.

Join us in the Civil Engineering department, where education is not confined to textbooks but extends to practical applications, enabling our students to excel in their academic journey and beyond.

Together, let’s build a better future through the power of civil engineering.

The Civil Engineering program is a comprehensive four-year curriculum that covers a wide range of topics, including structural, transportation, and wastewater treatment engineering. Students receive foundational education in designing and constructing civil and industrial structures, bridges, and geo-technical engineering projects.

The Bologna process
The department follows the Bologna process of study, ensuring a standardized and internationally recognized framework.
- Each academic year consists of 30 studying weeks.
- Divided into two semesters, with a total of 30 ECTS credits per semester.

Teaching and learning
The teaching and learning approach in our department allows graduates to engage with the professional community and work on real-world projects that positively impact society. The first two years focus on core civil engineering modules such as engineering mechanics, building materials, fluid mechanics, and environmental engineering, among others. In the final two years, students delve into specialized subjects like highway and transportation engineering, concrete design, water distribution systems, and geo-technical and foundation engineering. Some modules involve laboratory experiments, and all graduating students complete a project in their final year.

Assessment
Assessment in the program is comprehensive and includes written exams, quizzes, reports, coursework, and presentations. Additionally, a mandatory one-month summer training course during July or August in relevant fields enhances the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the third year.
All courses in our program are conducted in English

Ensuring a language of instruction that facilitates effective communication and prepares students for the globalized field of engineering. By offering courses in English, we provide an immersive learning environment that enhances students' language skills and prepares them for international opportunities in their future careers.
- Our program spans a total of 8 semesters
