A collaborative workshop focusing on earthquake mitigation in Iraq was successfully organized by the College of Engineering at the University of Sulaimani in partnership with Bauhaus University, Germany, and with the participation of Tishk International University under the title of:
Towards earthquake mitigation in Iraq: EMS-98 adopted vulnerability assessment of existing buildings
The workshop centered on improving the resilience of buildings in Iraq, particularly in Sulaimani, against seismic activity using the EMS-98 framework for vulnerability assessment. The project is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The event commenced with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Serwan Khorsheed, Dean of the College of Engineering. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lars Abrahamczyk from Bauhaus University followed with a seminar emphasizing the significance of this project, referencing similar initiatives successfully conducted worldwide.
Additional seminars were delivered by M.Sc. Peshawa Luqman Hasan (Lecturer at Bauhaus University) and Dr. Brwa Hamah Saeed Hamah-Ali (Lecturer at the University of Sulaimani) under the following titles:
The workshop also marked the formation of a dedicated student group tasked with collecting data on houses and buildings in Sulaimani following the EMS-98 framework, a key step in assessing and mitigating seismic vulnerability.
The event concluded with a speech by Dr. Chro Haider, Vice Dean of the College of Engineering, who expressed gratitude to the participants and contributors for their valuable input and collaboration.
