College of Engineering was one of the three colleges opened with the establishment of the University of Sulaimani in 1968. The college started with the Department of Civil Engineering, which admitted 44 students for the first academic year of (1968-1969). In (1973-1974), the Department of Electrical Engineering was added to the college with the acceptance of 30 students. The first graduated BSc class was in (1971-1972). The number of students was steadily increasing throughout the years that followed. By (1981), 1451 students graduated in 10 BSc classes from the School. At that year the University of Sulaimani was closed and moved to the city of Erbil under a new name, University of Salahaddin.


The University of Sulaimani was re-established in (1992) in Sulaymaniyah city, and the College of Engineering was re-opened in (September 1995) with the Department of Irrigation Engineering. Then the Building Construction Department began accepting students for the academic year (1996-1997) followed by the Department of Architecture Engineering in (1999-2000). After that, the Department of Electrical Engineering was founded for the academic year of (2004–2005). Between 1995 and 2018, 3791 engineers graduated with a bachelor degree from the College of Engineering with a percentage ratio of 56% male to 44% Female.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the College of Engineering is to produce well-qualified engineering graduates who are ready for immediate and productive entry into the workforce or for graduate studies. The college does so by providing practice-oriented education based on laboratory work principles and applications. The aim of the college is to teach and educate students with engineering science. This is to perform all the service projects in building construction, highways, irrigation, electrical engineering and architecture. Moreover, developing a Kurdish local engineering workforce to protect ancient buildings and construct a modern Kurdish architecture.

Our vision is to be a world-class College regionally, nationally and internationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in teaching, research, creative expression, community engagement and service. We will build on our existing strengths to become the leading engineering college in the region and the destination of choice for students and college staffs.

The Sulaimani Journal for Engineering Sciences SJES is a peer-reviewed journal published by the University of Sulaimani/ College of Engineering. The aim of the journal is to provide readers with current knowledge and researches in the field of Engineering. The area of interest is opinions, reviews, researches, Engineering practices, case report and other relevant Engineering. The journal accepts manuscripts via the journal office directly or the e-mail address of the journal ([email protected]). The scientific work should solely belong to the author or authors and not be published previously in any other journal or currently sent to any other publishers. All manuscripts will be exposed to a referee process.
